Google is paying tribute to John Lennon by displaying its first-ever animated doodle. The image set off a flurry of Internet searches for the term “John Lennon’s death,” but that’s not what the tribute is about. Google Doodles are placed on the website at certain points to honor a specific feat or accomplishment. Given the unique skills of John Lennon and his fame as The Beatles singer, it is not surprising that Google decided to honor him.
Paul McCartney and John Lennon founded the famous rock group, The Beatles. It is estimated that 14 million copies of his solo albums have been sold in the United States.
“Starting today and all day tomorrow, which would have been John’s 70th birthday, we’re celebrating him with our first-ever animated video doodle,” Mike Dutton, who creates the Google doodles, wrote on the company blog. “The old saying, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ still rings true, so I hope a moving picture will help me adequately–and simply–thank John for the memories.”
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Ono remembered that Lennon dreaded his 40th birthday; she said he would have been more relaxed about turning 70. Lennon was born on Oct. 9 in 1940. He died on Dec. 8 in 1980.
