Las Vegas Police picked up Paris Hilton late Friday on charges of possession of cocaine after stopping the car she was in on a Las Vegas street, a spokesperson confirmed. The socialite was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and released on her own recognizance at around 2:30 a.m. PT Saturday.
The hotel heiress was a passenger in a black Cadillac Escalade that was pulled over by police in front of the Wynn Hotel on the Vegas strip at about 11:30 p.m. after officers smelled what they suspected was marijuana. “Officers noticed a vehicle leaving a smoke trail of a controlled substance (and) made a stop based on that,” said Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin.
The driver was arrested for drug possession and through further interaction between Hilton and authorities, it was discovered she was in possession of cocaine, police say.
Her representative was not available for comment. Her publicist, Dawn Miller, did not immediately return an e-mail message from the AP.
Hilton was briefly detained in South Africa last month for allegedly smoking marijuana at the World Cup. The case was dropped and her publicist called the incident “a complete misunderstanding.”
