Heavy rains caused a second delay as the the US Open men’s singles final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic was suspended in the second set. The final was originally scheduled for Sunday, but a constant smattering of rain delayed it until Monday.
Nadal, who is seeking a career Grand Slam with a win, had made a fine start in his bid to become only the seventh man in history to do so. However, Djokovic remained composed, more than matching his opponent for power and looking a good bet to level the match at one set all.
Suddenly revitalized and firing winners all over the court, the Serb extended his lead to 4-1.
After losing 11 points in a row, though, Nadal came back to hold and trim Djokovic’s second-set lead to 4-2. Nadal then broke Djokovic with blistering groundstrokes in the next game and the Serb’s lead slipped further as Nadal put the set back on serve at 4-3.
Nadal then held to level at 4 games apiece and took all the momentum of the match as rain fell once again at Flushing Meadows. Brian Earley, tournament referee, quickly called the players off the court and another rain delay suspended the 2010 U.S. Open men’s final with Nadal up 6-4, 4-4 (30-30).
