Comedians Jon Stewart and The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. are holding an event in Washington to entertain the “troops”, and restore some sanity or fear in the process.
Thousands of people are flooding to the Mall in hopes of being motivated by the duo, while others are looking for an afternoon of entertainment. Stewart says the rally is not political, though it lands on the weekend before the midterm elections, and seems designed as the satirical reply to Beck’s “Rally to Restore Honor.”
Beck’s rally challenged people to restore honor and integrity in their relationships and take personal responsibility for their lives. Beck urged a gathering of 500,000 to “turn back to God” and return America to the values on which it was founded.
In contrast, today’s event will enable people to simply kick back, escape their problems and enjoy a day of laughter and relaxation. “This is for the people that are too busy, that have jobs and lives, and are tired of their reflection in the media as being a divided country and a country that’s ideological and conflicted and fighting. This is for those people,” Stewart told CNN’s Larry King.
Musical group The Roots will kick off the noon program.
