USTA Eastern To Hold First Annual Kings Cup in Brooklyn; Eight Teams to Compete on July 31

The United States Tennis Association’s Eastern Section will hold its first annual Kings Cup on July 31, with eight teams from public and private tennis facilities in Brooklyn competing for their place in New York City tennis history.

The tournament, which will be held at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, will give recreational players a chance to experience tennis as part of a team and learn about the wide range of opportunities to play tennis throughout the borough.

“Every week in Brooklyn, there are players of all ages and abilities competing in tournaments and enjoying the lifelong sport of tennis,” said Sonia Sader, a Tennis Program Specialist with USTA Eastern. “The King’s Cup will bring them together for one day a year, and be the crown jewel, engraved with the name of the winning team and displayed at Brooklyn Borough Hall.”

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is championing the event, which will bring together co-ed teams from the following facilities: Fort Greene Park, Heights Casino, Highland Park, Knickerbocker Field Club, Lincoln Terrace Park, Marine Park, McCarren Park, and Prospect Park.

“Kudos to the United States Tennis Association’s Eastern Section for hosting the first Kings Cup Tournament in beautiful Prospect Park, and for all its good work in Brooklyn, New York City and beyond,” Markowitz said. “Wimbledon may be famous for its strawberries and cream, but Brooklyn has its hot dogs and egg creams. And even Andy Roddick knows our borough and tennis go hand in hand-his wife’s name is Brooklyn. So, when it comes to serving up aces, it’s game, set, match, Brooklyn!”

The matches start at 9 am and are expected to wrap up by approximately 5 pm. This will be followed by a presentation of the Kings Cup and trophies to the winning team. The public is welcome to attend.
