Game Informer confirmed rumors that publisher/developer Valve Software will release DotA 2 for the Mac and PC in 2011. It will have a significant update that hasn’t been revealed, but Game Informer played it, and “it’s already amazing.”
Based on Warcraft 3 mod Defence Of The Ancients, the sub-genre features strategy and role-playing elements to level up singular heroes and fight off enemy armies. It features all the original’s gameplay elements, including the entire three-digit character roster. It’ll use the Source engine, so the graphics and lighting will be better. Valv’s commitment to community is legendary so you can count on there being all sorts of participation incentives, including some that reward coaching other players.
Icefrog, who had maintained and updated DotA in the past few years, was hired by Valve in 2009 and now they have teamed up to make DotA 2. “Icefrog is super smart! Everything he does is amazing! That’s why we aren’t changing anything.”
