In spite of the fact that AOL helped introduce the age of email it now hosts only a fraction of the email clients that Microsoft, Yahoo and Google do. In its attempt to draw users back home, AOL is undergoing a major face-lift.
Dubbed Project Phoenix, the new interface enables users to import their accounts from Yahoo Gmail and other e-mail services allowing them to use all their e-mail accounts from one source.
The new look also includes a short cut bar giving users the ability to access short email, text, IM, Twitter or Facebook status updates. Choosing the expanded inbox view exposes the first few lines of each email. A photo sidebar allows the user to manaage photo attachments.
AOL is also offering new email domain names for registering an email account. Now you can choose from ygm.com (you’ve got mail), games.com, wow.com, and love.com besides the traditional aol.com.
The beta version is currently limited to a fraction of the current AOL users, with the final version not expected to roll out until 2011.
